33rd edition

African

Latin American
Film Festival

From May 3rd to 12th, 2024, in Milan and on MYmovies.it.

The 33rd edition of the African, Asian, and Latin American Film Festival – FESCAAALwill take placefrom May 3rd to May 12th in theaters in Milan and streamed nationwide on MYmovies.it.

A new timeframe for this edition, a slight leap forward from late March to early May due to reasons beyond our control, but we are still happy to remain in the spring period that has always characterized our festival. The dates may change, but the mode remains the same, and the“hybrid” experience of our prismatic zebra continues: in theaters to highlight the cinemas of the city of Milan and online to break boundaries and reach all of Italy.

Three is Perfection

For this edition, the zebra comes in threes: 3 zebras representing the 3 continents that we’ve been portraying for 33 editions through the voices of directors, 3 zebras evoking the symbolism of the perfect number 3 and inviting harmony, unity in respecting diversities in such a conflictual and divisive historical moment.

The cinematic programming officially kicks off with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, May 3rd, hosted for the second year at the Cinema Godard of Fondazione Prada.

10 days of screenings, meetings with the authors, special events about cinemas and cultures of the 3 continents in various locations: Cineteca Milano Arlecchino and MIC, Cinema Godard and Auditorium San Fedele and through 5 sections

“Windows on the world” Feature Films Competition, a selection of the most recent feature films of the fiction and documentary genres from the three continents.

African Short Films Competition with the best short films created by cinematographers from the entire African continent and the diaspora. This section aims at promoting fledgling and young rookie directors, paying close attention to innovations and new expressive languages.

Extr’A Competition dedicated to Italian or Italian-based directors, reckoning with different cultures. This section hosts movies without genres or length distinction, whether filmed in Africa, Asia or Latin America or exploring themes of Italian multiculturalism.

Flash Section, a non-competitive section that includes the runaway hits of the Festival, Italian premieres of affirmed directors, critically acclaimed or major films from the most important international film festivals: the best of contemporary arthouse films from Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Tribute to Lav Diaz, a series of screenings in collaboration with Fondazione Prada dedicated to the multi-award-winning and visionary Filipino director, actor, producer, and editor Lav Diaz.

Special event

Among the extra-cinematographic events returns for the seventh consecutive year, the appointment with Africa Talks, whose focus for this edition will be on visual arts and creativity in Africa.

Through a roundtable, the debate around the visual creative sector will be deepened, from photography to graphics, exploring new trends, contamination with other sectors and markets, digital as a tool for communication and dissemination, freedom of expression, educational and career paths.

Africa Talks, for the seventh consecutive year, aims to be a moment of reflection on Africa in its most contemporary and emerging aspects. A space for meeting and dialogue between artists and experts to outline a picture of the African creative scene, with particular attention to the world of visual arts, its changes, and its main challenges.

MiWY

MiWorld Young Film Festival

From May 6th to May 11th 2024, the 5th edition of the MiWorld Young Film Festival – MiWY will take place. MiWY is the only film festival for schools entirely dedicated to the knowledge of the cinematographies and cultures of Africa, Asia, and Latin America and intercultural education. As always, it will be held within the framework of the FESCAAAL and in a hybrid mode, in a movie theater and online. The in-person screenings will take place in Milan and Lecco; the online screenings, instead, will be available on the MYMovies.it platform.

MiWY continues to showcase reality and stories from the three continents through unique perspectives and angles, adopting an approach that values education in the language of cinema and the experience of communal viewing and post-screening debates in person and remotely.

MiWY is a stage that through fictional narratives about present challenges encourages connections between young people and communities, highlighting convergences and causes of divergences, strengthening in girls and boys their citizenship of a common home, which is the entire planet, and participation in change.

The initiative is part of proposals for schools for Global Citizenship Education.Registrations for classes are now open. For further information contact Manuela Pursumal emailing coescuola@coeweb.org.
