Coming up is a new edition of the African, Asian, and Latin American Film Festival – FESCAAAL, the 33rd edition in Milan and online from May 3rd to May 12th, 2024. For this edition, the zebra comes in three: 3 zebras representing the 3 continents that have been narrated for 33 years through the voices of directors, 3 zebras evoking the symbolism of the perfect number 3, inviting harmony and unity in the respect of diversity in such a conflicting and divisive historical moment.
A small leap forward in the calendar, from the usual late March to early May but still in spring, the season that has always characterized our festival.
The dates may have changed but the “hybrid” experience of our prismatic zebra continues: in-person, to showcase the cinemas of the city of Milan and online to break boundaries and reach all of Italy.
This year too, we’re looking forward to 10 days of screenings, meetings with authors, special events on cinema and the cultures of the 3 continents in various locations in Milan, including the Cineteca Milano Arlecchino, the Cinema Godard of Fondazione Prada, and Auditorium San Fedele, as well as online.
3 competitive sections dedicated to feature films (fiction and documentaries) from Africa, Asia and Latin America, African short films, and Italian works; 1 non-competitive section with noteworthy premieres presenting films from the 3 continents acclaimed by critics or awarded in major international festivals.
Africa Talks: focus on visual arts and creativity
Among the extra-cinematographic events, the appointment with Africa Talks returns for the seventh consecutive year, a space for reflection and discussion on Africa in its most contemporary and emerging aspects organized by Associazione COE with Fondazione Edu. The focus of this edition will be on visual arts and creativity.
A round table with international guests and a screening will deepen the debate around the visual creative sector in Africa, from photography to graphics, focusing on new trends, cross-contamination with other sectors and markets, digital as a tool for communication and dissemination, freedom of expression, and educational and career paths.
MiWorld Young Film Festival returns!
From May 6th to May 11th 2024, the 5th edition of the MiWorld Young Film Festival – MiWY will also take place. The only cinema festival for schools entirely dedicated to the knowledge of African, Asian, and Latin American cinemas and cultures and intercultural education will be held in “hybrid” mode, both in-person and online. In-person screenings will take place in Milan and Lecco; online screenings, on the other hand, will be available on the MYMovies.it platform.
The initiative is part of proposals for schools for Global Citizenship Education.
Applications for classes are open. For more information, contact Manuela Pursumal by writing to coescuola@coeweb.org
